Abstract

Purpose: The aims of this study were to identify the levels of gender egalitarianism, self-esteem, and collective self-esteem of cadets and to investigate the correlations among them.
Methods : The data were collected using self-reported questionnaires comprised of the measurement tools for gender egalitarianism, self-esteem, collective self-esteem, and demographic characteristics from 423 cadets in the Republic of Korea.
Results : From the analysis of the results, positive correlations exist among the cadets` gender egalitarianism, self-esteem and collective self-esteem. Specifically, female cadets scored higher than male cadets in gender egalitarianism category. However, cadets` gender egalitarianism was not statistically significant in relation to demographic characteristics. Only the male cadets showed differences in gender egalitarianism related to parental nurture attitude.
Conclusion : These findings suggest that an educational program should be developed making a gender equality culture rather than focusing on the cadets` demographic characteristics to improve the male cadets` gender egalitarianism. More importantly, parental nurture attitude should be considered an affect factor in male cadets` gender egalitarianism. By improving cadets` gender egalitarianism, self-esteem and collective self-esteem could also be enhanced.
